Historical context: In May 1800 Napoleon Bonaparte led his army over the Great St Bernard Pass to surprise the Austrians in Italy, a campaign that ended in victory at Marengo. Jacques-Louis David painted this idealised scene between 1801 and 1805: the First Consul calm on a rearing horse, cloak billowing, with the names of Hannibal and Charlemagne carved in the rocks beside his own. In reality Napoleon crossed on a mule. This red-cloak version hangs in Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin.
