Historical context: Painted by James Montgomery Flagg in 1917, this is probably the most famous recruitment poster ever made. Flagg based Uncle Sam's stern face on his own, and over four million copies were printed as the United States entered the First World War. It was revived for the Second World War and has been imitated countless times since.
