Historical context: Designed for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in West Germany's 1953 federal election, this poster shows the eyes of a Soviet officer glaring from under a cap bearing the hammer and sickle, above the slogan "Alle Wege des Marxismus führen nach Moskau! Darum CDU" – "All roads of Marxism lead to Moscow! Therefore CDU". Aimed at the Social Democrats, it became one of the best-known images of early Cold War West Germany; Konrad Adenauer's CDU went on to win the election decisively.
