Historical context: Painted in 1917 by Maximilian Lenz, a founding member of the Vienna Secession, this poster promoted Austria-Hungary's sixth war loan. St George, in armour beneath the Habsburg double-headed eagle, rides down the dragon of the enemy inside an ornate golden medallion framed by the years 1914–1917. It is a striking example of how Vienna's Art Nouveau artists turned wartime appeals into decorative art.
