Historical context: Created by artist J. Howard Miller in 1942–43 for Westinghouse's War Production Co-ordinating Committee, this poster hung in the company's factories for only two weeks in February 1943 to boost worker morale. It was largely forgotten until it was rediscovered in the early 1980s, when it became one of the best-known images of the Second World War and a lasting symbol of women's strength, often linked with "Rosie the Riveter".
