Historical context: A giant clenched hand turns its thumb down over London, as the city's skyline – Tower Bridge, Big Ben and St Paul's – burns beneath a sky of smoke. Created by the Italian illustrator Gino Boccasile (1901–1952) during the early years of the Second World War, when Italy fought alongside Germany and London was under bombardment in the Blitz, it is one of the most dramatic and painterly Italian posters of the war.
